COSTP: Consults and AdvisoriesA partial list of COSTP’s educational consults, advisories,
contracts, and other activities: 1) Advisory to General Education and Learning Community (GELC)
staff- assigned by Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy (Sun sponsored GELC
at that time) to do discovery on the best way to move forward toward open
source K-20 textbook production and collaboration. 2) Connexions Project: Advisory with Connexions principals on key
structural needs for successful publication and adoption of open source
K-20 textbooks. 3) Soros Open Access Initiative: Advisory to the OAI board on
strategies to accomplish the sustainable publishing and distribution of
OER, worldwide. 4) Gates, MacArthur, Hewlett, and Annenberg Foundations:
Advisories on the importance of funding curriculum *materials* innovation,
in addition to funding for pure curriculum innovation. The Hewlett
Foundation, and others, went on to fund the Connexions Project, and other
projects dedicated to creation and distribution of Open-licensed
educational materials and courseware. 5) Utah Open State Courseware Project: Advisory to help UOSCP
understand the vagaries of textbook production, market realities, and
channel innovation necessary to make open source K-20 textbooks a viable
undertaking. 6) Wikipedia: Advised Wikipedia on licensing strategies and K-20
OER deployment and sustainability tactics. Created “wikiversity” project
within Wikipedia. Invited to participate by Wikipedia co-founder, Jimmy
Wales. 7) Venture Capital: Several advisories to the venture capital
community on for-profit-based educational materials distribution options
available to social entrepreneurial investors. A partial list includes Sun
Microsystems Corporate Venture Capital Group, New Schools Venture Fund,
Compass Technology Ventures, Revolution Ventures, Generation Investment
Management (UK), and others. 8) California State Education Department; California State Board
of Education; California Teacher's Union; various California State
Legislators: Advisories and consultations on strategies for sustainable
creation, deployment and use of OER. 9) Creative Commons: Advisory on the creation and construction of
Creative Commons educational and other licenses. 10) Advisory to K-20 open source projects based in India and
South Africa. 11) Eduventures, Boston, MA: Advisories on open content
strategies. 12) East China Normal University, Shanghai, China: Advisory and
consulting on utilization of open source educational materials for
industrial park education 16) Hewlett-Packard Imaging Group, Palo Alto, CA: Advisory on the
growth of open content and its impact on self-printing. 17) California Community College Open Textbook Collaborative:
Senior Research and Project Consultant to The Hewlett Foundation-funded
collaborative, founded by Martha Kanter, current United States
Undersecretary of Education. 18) CourseLoad: Consulted on strategic frameworks for deploying
CourseLoad’s portable platform content services to K-20 institutions. 19) eBook Lab Italia: Presentation on OER and the Future of Open
Technology in Education to major Italian and European publishers. 20) Italian Publishing Association: Presentation on the future of
Educational Technology in Publishing to major Italian publishers. 20) Institute for the Study of Knowledge and Management in
Education (ISKME): Consult and advisory on creating systems that leverage
ISKME research. 22) 20 Million Minds Foundation: Advisory on sustainable creation
